DMST for dry eye

Dynamic muscle stimulation used by some clinics to stimulate eyelid muscles and support meibomian gland function.

What is DMST?

DMST usually refers to dynamic muscle stimulation around the eyelids. Some dry eye clinics use it to stimulate eyelid muscles, improve blink mechanics, or support meibomian gland expression as part of a broader treatment plan.

How it works

A provider places treatment applicators around the eyelids or periocular area to deliver controlled stimulation. Protocols may be combined with heat, RF, IPL, or gland expression.

Potential benefits

  • Support blink-related eyelid muscle function
  • Complement treatments aimed at meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Help selected patients when poor blink mechanics contribute to symptoms

Risks and limitations

  • Dry eye-specific evidence and protocols are still developing
  • Temporary twitching, discomfort, redness, soreness, or irritation may occur
  • It may not address inflammatory, aqueous-deficient, or ocular-surface causes of dry eye on its own
