Radiofrequency (RF) for dry eye

Controlled radiofrequency energy used to warm tissue around the eyelids and support meibomian gland treatment.

What is Radiofrequency (RF)?

Radiofrequency treatment uses controlled electrical energy to warm tissue. Some eye-care clinics use RF around the eyelids to help soften thickened meibomian gland oils and support treatment of evaporative dry eye.

How it works

A clinician moves a treatment applicator over the skin while monitoring comfort and temperature. RF may be paired with manual meibomian gland expression.

Potential benefits

  • Warm meibomian gland oils
  • Support gland expression
  • Improve symptoms for some people with evaporative dry eye

Risks and limitations

  • Evidence and protocols are still developing
  • Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, or burns are possible
  • Not every RF device or cosmetic RF protocol is intended for dry eye care

Questions to ask a clinic

Is the RF device and protocol specifically used for eyelid or dry eye treatment?

How do you monitor temperature and protect the eye?

What findings from my eye examination support this treatment?

What alternatives should I consider first?

How will we measure whether it is helping?

What will the total treatment and follow-up cost be?
